iPhones and the Bible

Posted by Anne Witton on Friday, May 14, 2010, In : Christian

I have to admit that I think iPhones are cool. Every time the ads come on TV I become more convinced that I need one. The message of the app store ads is clear – whatever your need, whatever your interests, wherever you are, there is an app for that. Whether you need to check your train timetable, look up a recipe or just want to kill some time playing a game, there is an app to suit your need. So what’s that got to do with the Psalms? Written thousands of years ago, the Psalms encompa...

Watercolour

Posted by Anne Witton on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, In : General

I enjoy being a member of Whey Aye WI as we get to hear lots of interesting talks and have a go at some fun activities. Last night we were watercolour painting, which is a lot harder than it looks! I don't think I'll be selling my camera to buy an easel any time soon, but I was quite pleased with the two cards I managed to produce:

Narration in PowerPoint

Posted by Anne Witton on Monday, April 26, 2010, In : Tech

I wanted to create some stand-alone training PowerPoints for work, but had problems when the narration I’d recorded didn’t seem to synch properly with the animations of the slides. Having done a bit of research on the internet, this seems to be a common problem and it took me ages to work out an answer, so I thought I’d post it on my blog in case it’s helpful for anyone else.

So here’s how to add a narration to a PowerPoint and export it so that it runs seamlessly with the timings ...

Maternity leave for childless women?

Posted by Anne Witton on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, In : Singleness / Family life

I read with interest a recent article in the Telegraph about employers offering maternity pay to women without children.

The idea of ‘maternity’ pay for childless women seems a bit absurd when phrased like that. However, some sort of sabbatical in order to invest time in a worthwhile project outside of work, in lieu of maternity leave, seems like a sensible and rewarding prospect, not just for childless women, but for men as well.

I came across an interesting range of views on the Parenti...

Hen cam!

Posted by Anne Witton on Friday, July 17, 2009, In : Eggs

Whilst searching for suppliers of ostrich and emu eggs for my devilling pleasure, I came across the excellent Clarence Court website which features a 'hen cam'! Imagine my delight to discover that I could watch the hens roaming about! It was also a relief to read that they are 'given everything possible to allow freedom of expression', although that did lead me to expect to see a hen in a beret painting a watercolour, a couple of hens reading poetry to each other and a small chick playing the...

Fame!

Posted by Anne Witton on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, In : General
It's not every day that the press turn up at your WI meeting, but that's what happened to us last week. They seemed very interested in the idea of a WI that's aimed more at 'younger' women and shuns the usual jam-making for something a little bit more exciting like burlesque and drumming!

The piece was featured in the Journal this week, and I was quite surprised to see myself on the front cover! Check out my media page to see the coverage, and if you're a young(ish) woman in the Newcastle area...

TV voiceover

Posted by Anne Witton on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, In : Ethical / Fair trade

For Fairtrade Fortnight this year, Traidcraft produced a video focussed on our project to develop a fair trade market in India.

We were a bit tight on budget, so I ended up doing some of the filming (UK-based alas!) and also recording the voiceover. Fortunately, there were enough bits without me giggling for us to stitch it all together into something half-decent.

The lovely people at ethical.tv have hosted our video online – watch it here.

I had to enter my e-mail address so that they could send me an e-mail with my password that I needed to get them to stop sending me e-mails. Confused.com? You bet!

Eggstravaganza

Posted by Anne Witton on Thursday, April 30, 2009, In : Eggs
Pasta, pizza and ice cream are all well and good, but I found there just weren’t enough eggs in Italy for my liking. To rectify this, I decided to have an eggstravaganza when I got home. The recipe is very simple and the results were mouthwatering. My meal consisted of:
  • 4 devilled eggs
  • 1 fried egg
  • 1 poached egg
  • 1 scrabbled egg
  • A jacket potato with egg mayonnaise, ham and sweetcorn
  • A ham and sweet corn omelette

I have to say that it was absolutely delicious, although I did feel...

Snooker loopy

Posted by Anne Witton on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, In : General

On the way back from holiday in Italy, my friend Abby and I decided to pop into the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield. We had booked tickets for the morning session online a while ago and had perfectly decent seats towards the back of the theatre. However, we’d also managed to get returned tickets for the afternoon which we picked up when we got there. Much to our surprise we discovered we were on the FRONT ROW! We were so near the players that I could have reached out and poked them...
